Akamai sees attack traffic originate from 68 unique countries

2009-07-13

Akamai Technologies has seen attack traffic originating from 68 unique countries across the globe during the first quarter of this year.

The company, upon releasing its State of the Internet report, reported that the US and China were the two biggest attack traffic sources, representing almost 50 per cent of overall observed traffic over the same period, which may concern firms looking to prevent a data breach.

An almost five per cent increase in the number of unique IP addresses connecting to its network was noted by the company, which could mean more opportunities for IT intrusion executors.

It found that one-fifth of the internet connections across the globe were at speeds of more than 5 Mbps.

This accounted for a five per cent increase from the previous quarter, and an almost 30 per cent rise over the same period in 2008.

Over two-thirds (70 per cent) of UK organisations have been hit by one or more data breach incidents over the past year, according to the 2009 Annual Study: UK Enterprise Encryption Trends study by the Ponemon Institute, commissioned by PGP Corporation.
