Almost 70% of Australian firms suffer data breach in last 12 months

2009-08-11

Nearly seven out of ten Australian organisations have had to cope with a serious data breach in the past 12 months, research has indicated.

A poll by the Ponemon Institute, commissioned by PGP, of 482 companies revealed that 69 per cent saw a data breach over that time period, up from 56 per cent in 2008.

Of those companies that admitted to suffering from such an IT intrusion, almost two thirds (65 per cent) did not inform the public.

According to itwire.com, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute Dr Larry Ponemon said that 85 per cent of respondents said "when they take a strategic approach to their encryption applications and use a platform approach it increases the effectiveness and efficiency of their IT security program".

In July, a poll from the same bodies revealed that 85 per cent of US organisations were hit by one or more data breach incidents over the previous 12 months.
