Biggest e-threat named by BitDefender

2009-12-07

Trojan.AutorunINF.Gen has been named as the biggest threat to computer users at the current time.

This is the generic family of malware abusing the Autorun feature in Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to BitDefender.

It noted that all removable storage devices feature an autorun.ini script, which tells the computer what file to execute when the system is plugged in.

Those writing malware are now making changes to such files in order to launch malicious applications, the organisation explained.

As for other e-threats, in second place was Trojan.Clicker.CM, while Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen came in third. Trojan.Wimad was in fourth place and Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen in fifth.

Bringing up the rear in tenth place was Trojan.Downloader.Bredolab.AZ, which comes disguised as a Microsoft Word document before monitoring users' keyboard input via a key logging component and sending the data to a website situated in Russia.

BitDefender recently gave out a number of tips for online shoppers to stay safe this festive season. One of its recommendations was to make purchases from a secure PC with a decent security suite.
