Data breach hits Express Scripts

2009-10-05

One of the biggest pharmacy benefit management companies in North America, Express Scripts, has been hit by a data breach and is notifying members.

Back in October last year, the company announced that it received a letter from an unknown person who was attempting to extort money from the firm.

This person threatened to expose millions of Express Scripts' members' records and the letter included personal data on 75 members.

In August 2009, the FBI informed the company that the perpetrator had more member records from the same period as those noted in the 2008 extortion attempt.

The firm said that it was monitoring the situation closely and affirmed that it is committed to the protection of members' data.

It added that it is standing firm in its refusal to succumbing to the demands of the extortionist.

Established in 1986, Express Services runs administrative, pharmacy and customer service operations across the US and Canada.
