Data breach hits Toronto Hydro

2009-07-30

Toronto Hydro-Electric System has admitted to a data breach as it announced that some of its customer account numbers have been acquired by an unauthorised third party.

It is not yet clear what the reasons behind the data breach are but the firm has exhibited concern that the information may be used to contact customers to obtain personal financial details or payment by credit card.

The firm stressed that Toronto Hydro representatives would not contact customers to confirm the accuracy of account or personal financial data either over the phone or door-to-door.

Police have been contacted and a full investigation has been initiated and no personal financial information is thought to have been acquired, while customers have been notified with a letter and a communique on the Toronto Hydro website.

The company is responsible for running both Toronto Hydro-Electric System and Toronto Hydro Energy Services, which have a combined workforce of more than 1,400 people.
