Data breach notification 'needs consideration'
2009-07-22
If a data breach occurs then firms need to consider how best to inform customers or clients as it will have a big impact on how they will respond, it has been claimed.
Non-profit organisation Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) said that data breach notification letters "set the tone" for future relations with the individuals affected.
Analysis from the company revealed that the majority of such letters are long, confusing and obscure the required information.
Many of these notifications do not provide correct instructions, while the language used is often difficult to understand by the general public, according to ITRC.
The organisation asserted that a data breach notification letter needs to be easy to understand and have information within in it that will help win back the customer or client's trust.
In recent developments, it has emerged that the overall number of breaches reported by the ITRC stands at 303 as of July 21st.
