Data breach notification 'signals higher chance of identity theft'

2009-11-04

People that receive a data breach notification letter is four times more likely to suffer identity theft in the next year, it is believed.

This is according to Javelin Strategy & Research's new report, Data Breach Notifications: Victims Face Four Times Higher Risk of Fraud, which has just been added to Research & Markets' offering.

It suggests that there appears to be a disconnection between data breach notifications and consumer understanding of possible outcomes of these violations.

The report, which may inspire companies to implement security software to prevent an IT intrusion, features an update of data breach incidents for 2009 as well as covering the implications of changes to legislation.

A timeline of some of the worst recent data breaches in US history is also included.

Information gathered by Software AG recently revealed that UK businesses reported 356 data breach incidents to the Information Commissioner's Office in the UK between November 2008 and September 2009.
