Data loss incidents 'very costly'
2009-07-08
Data loss incidents can be very costly and thankfully data loss protection (DLP) vendors are continuing to focus on regulatory compliance, it has been suggested.
Randy George, writing for InformationWeek, noted that one of the publication's surveys revealed that the need to support and prove compliance of data privacy or other sector regulations is a catalyst for buying an enterprise DLP package, which could help prevent a data breach.
Only 11 per cent of respondents said that penalties relating to noncompliance do not justify the investment in DLP, he revealed.
Over one-fifth (14 per cent) said they believe they are not subject to any regulations, Mr George noted.
Another issue companies adopting DLP need to address is having to match a broad and often vague set of regulatory requirements to certain DLP features, he added.
Data security is still a top priority for firms in the current economic downturn, Information Security Media Group marketing manager Mike D'Agostino recently asserted.
