Data protection maintenance costs more than hardware and software?

2009-07-22

Companies spend four times more on maintaining data protection operations than bringing in the hardware and software to carry it out, it has been suggested.

FalconStor Software's Fadi Albatal, in an article for Computer Technology Review, said that while it is important to reduce capital outgoings, the area that can significantly affect an IT budget is operating expenditure.

He asserted that the best way to lower operational expenditure is through consolidation of business processes, and that data backup and disaster recovery are no longer separated.

By adopting a holistic approach, companies "can have guarantees on your recovery time objective", Mr Albatal commented.

"So a consolidated data protection platform gives you the flexibility to apply the right protection method to the right set of data," he added.

Kathleen Ellis, writing for Insurance Journal, recently asserted that large global firms are having to cope with potential threats from insiders because of the economic downturn as well as regulatory compliance.
