Data security 'a tightrope' for IT pros
2009-09-24
Data security has been described as a "tightrope" for IT professionals who have to deal with issues such as data breach incidents.
IT departments are tasked with balancing data protection measures against meeting budget and efficiency targets, which is a tough call, according to vice-president of Symantec John Turner.
Making his comments at the Gartner Information Security Summit, Mr Turner explained that making choices on what security capabilities to deploy can feel as dangerous as a balancing act for IT departments.
"On one side is risk and on the other side is the reward," he stated.
IT professionals need to deal with "the right amount of risk" regardless of what other issues there are to be addressed.
He added that he expects to see "operationalising" of security capabilities "widening" over the next few years.
The Gartner Information Security Summit took place at London Lancaster Hotel and covered a wide array of subjects including mobile and wireless security.
