Downeast Energy & Building Supply on wrong end of data breach
2009-09-21
Downeast Energy & Building Supply has reported on a data breach which could lead to a loss for the company of around $150,000 (£92,365).
The news came after one of its bank accounts at Key Bank was accessed without authorisation and the data breach happened because of a response to a particularly sophisticated phishing e-mail, according to the company.
"We are continuing to work closely with law enforcement and our bank to ensure that our account is secured but more importantly to protect our customers as well," commented John Peters, president of Downeast Energy.
Mr Peters apologised to his customers for any inconvenience caused by what he described as "an unfortunate incident".
The company recognised that the perpetrators of the data breach could have gained access to names and bank details of Downeast's Electronic Funds Transfer accounts customers.
Downeast Energy & Building Supply provides heating and hardware services in Maine.
