Encrypted file transfer solutions 'becoming business essentials'

Encrypted email and file transfer solutions are becoming a business and legal requirement because of the large amounts of sensitive data stored within and delivered by email, it has been claimed.

Secure or encrypted email will be a top-five priority for businesses' IT spending through late 2010, according to Osterman Research white paper, partly sponsored by Smarsh, named the Critical Need for Encrypted Email and File Transfer Solutions.

According to the study, 44 US states had initiated data breach notification laws by the end of last year.

It also reported that 25 countries had taken on similar legislation.

"Companies are paying a heavy price for data breaches or content interception. Leaks of confidential corporate data and hardship to consumers carry consequences," said Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research.

Last month, MessageLabs head Adrian Chamberlain told ZDNet UK that April G20 sent emails to government workers by name as they tried to carry out an IT intrusion into their computers.
