Firms may see more data breaches occurring

2009-08-10

Companies could see the number of data breaches they experience increase as one firm claimed internet scams are becoming more prevalent.

Get Safe Online, which aims to raise awareness of IT security issues, warned that it is becoming more common for people to be tricked online.

Tony Neate, managing director of the organisation, stated: "Scams like this are becoming far more prevalent."

He added that companies need to take "simple precautions to make sure that they know who they are dealing with", in order to avoid data breaches.

When dealing over the internet, the expert advised firms to ensure they know where the other company is based and establish whether they have a landline telephone number and a postal address.

He added that this is particularly important when businesses are looking for different suppliers and approaching new firms if they want to avoid data breaches.

Mr Neate's comments follow research from Paul Miloseski-Reid, a trading standards officer, who said one particular problem is that it is very difficult to track down the people behind the websites.
