Govt cyber security proposals criticised

2009-07-01

Government proposals on cyber security in the UK are too tame and slow, it has been claimed.

The Institute for Public Policy Research's (ippr) Commission on National Security has said the recently announced National Security Strategy does not go far enough.

Dr Ian Kearns, deputy commissioner of ippr's Commission on National Security, said that he actually welcomed the government announcement with its emphasis on cyber security.

However, he criticised the strategy for not going as far as it should have and suggested the government is being "too complacent" of the risks that are out there.

The Commission on National Security has subsequently recommended that the government should provide support for the cyber equivalent of Neighbourhood Watch.

This would be done through collaboration with the law-abiding technical community, the commission explained.

In contrast to the aforementioned criticism, senior policy adviser at the British Chambers of Commerce Gareth Elliott recently praised the creation of the new Cyber Security Operations Centre based in Cheltenham.
