Hackers 'exploit' Tiger Woods crash

2009-12-01

Organisations looking to avoid a data breach may be concerned by news that hackers have already jumped on a recent story surrounding Tiger Woods.

Sophos has found that hackers created web pages not long after the car accident involving the famous golfer, claiming to feature video related to the incident.

In reality, these sites are designed to spread potentially dangerous malware, the organisation explained.

"Hackers don't waste any time jumping on the coat-tails of a hot news story like this, in their attempt to infect as many computer users as possible," commented Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

He added that users who believe they are about to see footage related to the incident could find that the site is attempting to install a Trojan horse on their computer, handing control of the system over to cybercriminals.

Mr Cluley was recently given the IT Security Blog of the Year accolade at the Computer Weekly awards.
