Hackers jump on Google Wave interest for IT intrusion means

2009-11-03

Google Wave is already attracting the attention of hackers who are using interest in it to carry out an IT intrusion, it has been reported.

Symantec has revealed that internet users are being encouraged to download an invitation tool that purportedly allows them to access Google Wave.

However, the file is in fact malware, possibly allowing the attacker to control the infected computer.

"Using a trusted brand like this increases the chance of success for the attacker. Unfortunately, this technique is something fraudsters use all the time and internet users should be wary," said Patrick Fitzgerald, security analyst at Symantec.

He added that cybercriminals have used Google Wave as the bait for their attacks because of its current popularity.

In related news, the recent Microsoft Security Intelligence Report recently revealed that worm infections in the enterprise increased by close to 100 per cent over the first half of 2009 compared to the six months that preceded it.
