Hackers use Ashley Greene scandal for malware attacks

2009-08-17

Hackers are using nude pictures of Twilight star Ashley Greene to spread malware, posting links on internet message boards and forums, it has been reported.

Graham Cluley, writing on the Sophos company blog, pointed to one particular link that leads to a webpage which attempts to install malware on users' computers if they are visiting from an Apple Mac.

People may also be tempted into downloading the plugin, which poses as MacCinema, although Sophos has discovered it is OSX/Jahlav-C, Mr Cluley explained.

He noted that Windows users are not immune to such attacks either, as the webpage can deliver the appropriate malware to the system.

This is not the first time that hackers have made the most of news stories involving naked celebrities, with similar attacks involving images of Erin Andrews, Mr Cluley added.

PandaLabs recently noted that hackers will modify the code of malware just 24 hours after going into circulation so that it can continue to be spread without security companies detecting it.
