ICO reported UK data breaches reach 356 in 2009

UK businesses reported 356 data breach incidents between November 2008 and September 2009, new figures reveal.
Data on IT intrusions gathered by Software AG indicates that the number of incidents reported to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) was significantly higher than in the previous year.
Only 190 incidents were reported to the organisation between October 2007 and November 2008.
Tim Holyoake, lead technologist at Software AG, suggested that this trend is going against expectations.
He said: "The chronic problem of data loss should be in decline, and not increasing as these figures seem to indicate."
Software AG also suggested that companies and other organisations are failing to take the appropriate precautions to prevent data loss.
Earlier this month the data protection regulator the ICO underlined the importance of data protection in the digital age, as compared to the physical document management that characterised the industry 30 years ago.
