IT intrusion hits Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism
2009-08-14
The Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism has reported that a hacker may have carried out an IT intrusion into its primary web server.
According to the school, the server had a database with social security numbers belonging to 493 individuals who applied for the school between September 2007 and May 2009.
Following the incident the server was immediately secured and fully scanned for weaknesses before the web service was eventually restored for the school.
An investigation into an individual's claims that they had hacked into the server found sufficient evidence to support the assertion.
However, there is no evidence that any data was actually stolen or even seen by the hacker.
Student applicants have now been mailed notification of the incident.
This year's applications, which may extra need protection from a data breach, for autumn 2010 admission is December 1st this year.
Applicants need to complete an online application, the Applicant Summary Sheet and the supplement materials package.
