IT security seen as 'unacceptably dangerous'

2009-08-11

The state of IT security is now viewed as unacceptably dangerous, it has been claimed.

According to Richard Hunter, vice-president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, this opinion has come about partly because of recent articles describing the growth and level of criminal hacking networks targeting governments and industries.

Recent statements by representatives of US and UK governments have also been somewhat responsible for the negative view of IT security, Mr Hunter explained.

He cited Gartner research which projected that either catastrophe from IT failure or a continuing history of lower-level failures would lead to government-enforced regulation or industry self-regulation of IT products and services in the US by 2015 and in the EU between 2015 and 2018.

"Although the exact date of arrival for regulation is difficult to predict, we believe that, in recent months, the tempo and intensity of the indications of such an event have increased," Mr Hunter added.

Social networking site Twitter has recently been the target of IT attacks, with Twitter co-founder Biz Stone writing on a company blog that these have been shifting in both their nature and intensity.
