Improving data security in the cloud

2010-01-27

There are a number of steps that businesses can take to improve the security of their data in the cloud.

Kevin Coleman, certified management consultant and strategic advisor with the Technolytics Institute, said that firms should look to establish a cloud provider security risk profile and update it at least once a year.

Writing for TMCnet, Mr Coleman said companies using the form of data storage should also know the name of other organisations supported by the cloud.

This will help them assess any high risks these firms could bring, he explained.

Mr Coleman wrote on the website that by following such advice, companies are more likely to avoid any issues with cloud vendors.

Last month, Gartner suggested that IT organisations will spend more money on private cloud computing investments rather than on such services offered by public providers, through 2012.

"Larger enterprises will continue to have an IT organisation that manages and deploys IT resources internally, some of which will be private clouds," said Tom Bittman, vice-president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.
