Mafia linked to LexisNexis data breach

2009-07-15

A mafia crime family may have been responsible for the most recent data breach incurred by company LexisNexis in the US.

The global technology company has informed consumers that a man with ties to a mafia crime family may have been responsible for the attacks.

It is alleged that Lee Klein of Boyton Beach, who is said to have worked with a group of criminals associated with the Bonanno crime family, accessed personal information held by LexisNexis.

In a statement, the company said: "The former Seisint customer involved in this matter should have provided notice to potentially affected individuals.

"However, because the customer is no longer in business we provided the notice."

It comes after a major data breach in the US and South Korea, which prompted one US senator to call for cyber reprisals directed at North Korea, where he alleged the attacks had originated.

Further investigations indicated that the attack may actually have originated from the UK.
