Malware threat for Snow Leopard

2009-08-28

A number of websites claiming to offer free Snow Leopard upgrade are in fact riddled with malware, it has been claimed.

According to Trend Micro researcher Feike Hacquebord, numerous sites do not offer an upgrade to the operating system, but rather contain the Jahlav malware.

"Once executed, OSX_JAHLAV.K decrypts codes which include a script that downloads other malicious scripts," the firm said in a blog, V3.co.uk reports.

It then alters the DNS configuration which could in turn lead to users being redirected to phishing sites, it added.

Users should be wary of any sites offering the upgrade, Trend suggested, advising that consumers turn directly to Apple to buy the upgrade to the operating system.

Earlier this week, IBM's X-Force claimed that consumers should now be wary of almost every site on the web, due to the continued increase in the number of malicious attacks and malicious content on trusted sites.
