McAfee and Facebook join forces in data security initiative

2010-01-14

McAfee and Facebook have joined forces in a deal which has seen the firms produce consumer-friendly education materials that will be made available to social networks users.

The firms are hoping to make the internet safer and the education content will appear on the Facebook Security Page.

McAfee will also regularly updates its own Facebook page, which will feature security information on protecting children, among other advice.

"Keeping the internet secure requires that users, security vendors and internet companies all work together. We think we've developed an excellent model for this collaboration," said Elliot Schrage, vice president of global communications, marketing and public policy at the social networking site.

As part of the agreement, McAfee has now become the social media company's exclusive consumer security software provider.

PC World recently named its top security nightmares from the noughties, with Myspace, Facebook and Twitter attacks making the list.

The website pointed to the problems Facebook faced with the Koobface worm.
