Network Solutions admits to data breach
2009-07-27
Network Solutions has experienced a data breach having found unauthorised code on a number of servers supporting some of its e-commerce merchants' websites.
This code may have been used to move data on certain transactions for around 4,343 of its merchant websites, of which there are more than 10,000, to servers outside the company, Network Solutions explained.
It revealed that the data being transferred may have included credit card information and the code could have captured transaction data from around 573,928 cardholders for periods during spring.
There have not been any reports so far of any credit card account data being misused.
Network Solutions will now work with credit reporting agency to contact its merchants' customers whose data could have been affected by the breach.
The firm manages more than seven million domains and over 350,000 websites.
It was founded in 1979 and has now evolved from the small systems integration engineering company it once was.
