Perimeter E-Security: Malware top 2010 threat to firms
2010-01-21
Malware has topped Perimeter E-Security's top ten data security threats to organisations in 2010, moving up one place from the previous year's list.
The information security company noted that there are many methods to install malware on systems, while browsers are still a top target for vulnerabilities.
As for other dangers, malicious insiders were ranked in second, dropping down from top place compared to the previous year. Perimeter E-Security said that it was unsurprising that the economic downturn had led many desperate and discontented workers to try to exploit the companies they currently or previously worked for. The firm said that such insiders will continue to be a threat with the economy still troubled and unemployment still at high levels.
In third place was vulnerability exploitation, which is at the centre of data breach incidents and hacking, the organisation explained. It said that organisations are not doing enough when it comes to patch management and hackers are often exploiting client side vulnerabilities and other weaknesses associated with 3rd party applications.
"Information security is an ever-evolving discipline that requires tremendous expertise, time, and money to effectively manage. Every organisation should take stock of what they are doing today and how well their current solutions mitigate the risk of the top ten threats," commented Kevin Prince, chief technology officer of Perimeter E-Security.
"The start of a new year is a great time for companies to evaluate their information security practices and begin thinking about what threats they'll be facing in the coming year," he added.
Mr Prince concluded that in the majority of cases, changes will need to be enforced and new technology should be implemented to make sure that the company is properly secured for whatever attacks cybercriminals are planning for 2010.
In recent news, V3 predicted that spam levels will increase this year.
