Safety measures 'can prevent large data breach incidents'

2009-08-20

There are a number of steps that organisations can take to prevent being hit by a data breach of similar magnitude to the one that struck Heartland Payment Systems, it has been claimed.

One of these measures is to make the wireless network safer at a firm by segregating it from the primary network to provide an added layer of protection, according to Tony Bradley, writing for PC World.

He asserted that data breach incidents at both TJX and Lowes were both made possible because of weak or absent wireless network security.

Diligence is also another important issue for companies looking to protect their data, Mr Bradley commented, and organisations should remember that a network which was PCI DSS-compliant at the time of the audit is not certain to be so a month later.

It recently emerged that three men had been charged in connection with major data breaches, including the one involving Heartland Payment Systems.
