Soca and FBI look to collaborate on cybercrime

2009-10-23

The UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have called for greater collaboration to fight cybercrime.

Head of intelligence at Soca's e-crime department Andy Auld and Keith Mularski, supervisory special agent in the FBI's cyber unit, told delegates at the RSA Conference Europe event in London that working together is important.

Mr Auld gave the example of the Russian Business Network (RBN) cybercrime organisation as the kind of criminal body they were targeting.

In this case, the network registered as a local internet registry with RIPE, the European body that allocates IP resources.

IT PRO reported Mr Auld as adding: "Essentially what you have if you interpret it very harshly, RIPE is receiving criminal funds and was therefore involved in money laundering offences."

The RSA Conference looks to spread awareness of the information security agenda across the world by holding events in the US, Japan and Europe.
