Vulnerability found in Cisco wireless LAN infrastructure

2009-08-28

A wireless vulnerability and possible exploit for attackers to take advantage of has been found in Cisco wireless LAN infrastructure.

The AirMagnet Intrusion Research Team found that the vulnerability lies in Cisco's Over-the-Air-Provisioning (OTAP) feature found in its wireless access points.

Control of a Cisco AP can be acquired to gain access to a customer's wireless LAN.

AirMagnet has named the vulnerability SkyJack, which needs the OTAP feature to be enabled.

An ultimate result of the threat coming into force could be a company's access point being controlled by an outside source, such as a hacker or other cybercriminals.

AirMagnet has now told Cisco about the vulnerability and the latter is seeking to rectify the problem.

It also advised people using Cisco to not run the OTAP feature.

Cisco, established in 1984 by a number of computer scientists from Stanford University, is a world leader in networking for the internet, providing hardware, software as well as service offerings.
