Xmas shoppers 'should ensure website legitimacy' before buying

2009-11-11

People looking to avoid a data breach this Christmas as they shop for gifts, either at home or in the workplace, should make sure they are buying from a legitimate website, a report has advised.

According to PayPal research, around 27 million people in Britain will do their Christmas shopping online this year, but only one in seven see checking that they are buying from a trusted website as a priority.

Garreth Griffith, head of risk and security at PayPal, commented: "Shoppers will be able to get some great bargains online this Christmas but there is no need to sacrifice security in the hunt for a great deal."

He said that if an offer looks like it is too good to be true then consumers should take a couple of minutes to make sure that it is safe.

Research from Kelkoo recently showed that online spending could hit £8.9 billion this year.
