iPad announcement leads to potential security problems
2010-02-01
A number of companies have identified security issues that have arisen in relation to the announcement of the Apple iPad.
Trend Micro threat engineers have uncovered some malicious search results while looking for details on the announcement of the Apple device.
They were associated with the blackhat search engine FAKEAV campaigns.
Once clicked on, the search results take the user to a download of a rogue antivirus software, which Trend Micro has detected as TROJ_FAKEAV.EAM.
"When executed, TROJ_FAKEAV.EAM displays a professional-looking graphical user interface (GUI) to supposedly lure users to install the software," the company explained in a blog.
Websense Security Labs ThreatSeeker Network came across similar findings, saying that in the lead up to the iPad announcement, there was a notable rise in search result rankings for blackhat SEO attacks.
A recent report from Intego, named The Year in Mac Security 2009, found that last year was a busy one in terms of Mac security issues.
